We've Robbed Two Asteroids and Brought the Loot Back to Earth

In the span of three years, humanity pulled off two of the most audacious heists in history. The targets weren’t banks. They were asteroids — mountains of primordial rubble, older than any rock on Earth, flying through space at tens of thousands of kilometers per hour.
Heist #1: Hayabusa2 (Japan). In 2019, JAXA’s spacecraft didn’t just land on asteroid Ryugu — it shot it. First it fired a tantalum bullet into the surface to kick up dust for collection. Then it escalated: from a safe distance it detonated a copper projectile into Ryugu at 7,000 km/h, blasting an artificial crater, and later swooped down to grab freshly exposed underground material — untouched by billions of years of space weathering. In December 2020, its sample capsule streaked into the Australian outback with 5.4 grams of asteroid.
Heist #2: OSIRIS-REx (NASA). In 2020, at asteroid Bennu, NASA’s spacecraft performed a maneuver best described as a high-five with a vacuum cleaner: its collector head touched the surface for about six seconds, fired a burst of nitrogen gas, and caught the debris. The surface turned out to be so loose the spacecraft nearly sank in — Bennu behaves less like rock and more like a ball pit. The capsule parachuted into Utah in September 2023 carrying about 120 grams.
The loot was worth the trouble. Both samples contain water-bearing minerals and organic molecules — including, in Bennu’s case, amino acids and all five nucleobases used by DNA and RNA. The ingredient list for life, riding around the solar system on rocks, exactly as the theory of delivery-by-asteroid predicted.
These missions rewrote a question. It’s no longer “could the seeds of life have come from space?” It’s “how much of the recipe arrived that way?”
