Billions of Planets Are Drifting Through the Galaxy With No Star at All

Every planet you’ve ever pictured orbits a star. But the galaxy is full of worlds that don’t — planets that wander the darkness between stars entirely alone, bound to nothing, lit by no sun. How does a planet end up starless? Most were probably born normally, in a disk around a young star — and then got evicted. Early solar systems are chaotic, gravitational demolition derbies where giant planets fling smaller ones outward. Some are thrown so hard they escape their star’s grip forever, tumbling off into interstellar space to drift for eternity.

We detect these invisible wanderers through a beautiful trick of Einstein’s physics: gravitational microlensing. When a rogue planet passes precisely in front of a distant star, its gravity briefly bends and magnifies the star’s light — a momentary flicker that betrays a dark mass with no sun of its own.

The population estimates are staggering:

Now the part that flips a common assumption: a rogue planet isn’t necessarily dead. Cut off from starlight, its surface would be frozen near absolute zero — but a planet can generate its own heat from radioactive decay in its core, exactly as Earth does. A rogue world with a thick atmosphere, or a sub-surface ocean warmed from below, could conceivably keep liquid water hidden underground for billions of years, in total darkness.

Which raises a genuinely eerie possibility: the most common habitable environments in the universe might not be sunlit planets at all. They might be starless wanderers, drifting through the dark, warming their own hidden seas with no sky to look up at.
