The Water You Drink Is Older Than the Sun

Take a sip of water. Some of the molecules that just passed your lips are older than the Sun.
That’s not poetry — it’s the conclusion of a landmark 2014 study that traced the chemical fingerprint of the solar system’s water. The key is deuterium, a heavy form of hydrogen. Water made in the frigid darkness of interstellar space carries a distinctive ratio of deuterium to normal hydrogen — a ratio that’s very hard to produce in the warm environment of a newborn star system.
Earth’s oceans carry too much deuterium to have formed locally from scratch.
The verdict: somewhere between 30% and 50% of the water on Earth predates the solar system itself. Those molecules formed on the surfaces of dust grains drifting in a cold molecular cloud, more than 4.6 billion years ago — before the Sun ignited, before planets existed, before there was a “here” here.

And the same study carried a bigger implication: if our water is mostly inherited interstellar stock rather than a local fluke, then water-rich planets should be common across the galaxy. The universe’s most important molecule appears to be standard-issue equipment.
